Tri-State Library Users
Tri-state Library Users is a chapter of both the Kentucky Council of the Blind and the Library Users of America, a special-interest affiliate of the American Council of the Blind. TLU presents programs related to books, technology, and accessibility of libraries to individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Tri-state Library Users holds meetings on the Kentucky Council of the Blind Zoom platform that are of interest to participants from across the state and around the country. Meetings can include interesting speakers such as authors, time for sharing favorite books, resources for digital and audio materials, and tips for using information technology. Some examples of presenters on past programs include:
- Carla Ruschival, discussing how to read free and low-cost books on the iPhone and iPad with the Amazon Kindle app;
- Joon Lee from the American Printing House for the Blind, discussing copyrights and copyright issues;
- Turley Richards, singer, songwriter, recording artist and author;
- Dr. Judith M. Dixon from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped in Washington, DC and author of “Get the Picture”, a book explaining how people who are blind can take pictures with their iPhones;
- Carole Tobe, retired curator of the American Printing House for the Blind Museum and author of “The History of APH”;
- A representative of Bookshare discussing updates and tips for using this tremendous on-line resource for digital braille and audio files of educational and leisure reading materials for all ages; and
- Kim Charlson, Director of the Regional Talking Book Library at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA, sharing services that her library offers to people with low vision throughout the nation.
Page Turners is an event sponsored by the Tri-state Library Users and held the fourth Saturday of each month from 2:00 to 4:00 PM as part of the Greater Louisville Council of the Blind Roundabout on the KCB Zoom platform. Participants are invited to share information about books they have read, either recently or in the past; everyone is also welcome to just listen and learn about books they might wish to read. Resources for the books discussed are given, and questions are answered as to how to use the technology needed to obtain and read on-line texts in braille and audio formats from a variety of sources.
Tri-State Library Users holds a book club and business meeting on the third Friday of each month at 7:30 PM Eastern on the Zoom platform. TLU also sponsors a workshop, themed event, or speaker at the state conference of the Kentucky Council of the Blind in November each year. Topics include the latest updates from the Kentucky Talking Book Library in Frankfort and the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled in Washington, DC; tips for preserving old photos and documents; and presentations by authors.
Tri-State Library Users was actively involved in the 50-year anniversary celebration of the Kentucky Talking Book Library, held on April 1, 2019. TLU assisted in the planning and financial support of the event, and TLU President Bill Wright spoke at the celebration.
New Members Welcome
New members are always welcome. Membership is open to anyone who is at least 16 years of age or older and who lives in Kentucky or within 25 miles of the Kentucky border. Dues are $12.00 a year, and membership in the Kentucky Council of the Blind is also required. For more information, call us at (502) 895-4598.
