KCB Board Meeting – August, 2016
The monthly meeting of the Kentucky Council of the Blind Board of Directors was held via conference call on Monday, August 15, 2016. President Deb Lewis called the meeting to order at 8:03 PM eastern time. Answering the roll call were Deb Lewis, Joey Couch, Rick Boggess, Carla Ruschival, Debbie Deatherage, Bill Roberts, Frank Campbell, Bill Deatherage, “Cisco” Slusher, Bill Wright, Gerry Slusher, and Elaine Weisbard. Shirley Stivers checked in late. Deb Trevino, Amanda Selm, Natalie Beyers, Matt Selm (replacing Lisa McKeown) and Josh Gentry were absent. Guest Dan Dillon (ACB board liaison) and Adam Ruschival were also present.
President Deb Lewis called for reading the July 18 board meeting minutes and summary. Rick Boggess pointed out that he had discovered a $1 typing error in the treasurer’s report which was corrected and shared via email. Since copies were distributed in advance, Bill Deatherage made a motion to dispense with their reading and for approval as amended. The motion was seconded by Elaine Weisbard and unanimously approved.
Treasurer’s Report
Carla Ruschival presented her report for July. Elaine Weisbard made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report. The motion was seconded by Bill Deatherage and unanimously approved.
Chapter Reports
Eastern Kentucky Christian Council: Frank Campbell reported that 13-14 people attended the July 23 picnic. The next meeting will be in September.
Northern Kentucky Council: Gerry Slusher reported they have brailled four restaurant menus as part of the New Trail project. The chapter is planning a block party at the end of the month if they can secure the appropriate city permits. They are trying to help Teddy Lisle find transportation to and from Frankfort for work. Bill Wright suggested that Gerry contact TANK to see if they offer transportation to Frankfort. Gerry Slusher will share teddy’s contact information with Carla Ruschival as requested. Gerry also reported there are some new videos about the New Trail on their Facebook page. Dan Dillon indicated he has thermoform paper to share. Carla Ruschival will send Dan contact information for Gerry and her.
Greater Louisville Council: Debbie Deatherage reported that about 30 people attended Roundabout on August 12. Rob Meridith from APH demonstrated the Nearby Explorer GPS app which will soon be released for IOS devices at around $79. There will not be an August dine out. The chapter’s quarterly meeting will be on September 16.
Tri-State Library Users Group: Bill Wright reported there will be a conference call meeting at 8 PM on August 16. Joon Lee from APH will talk about copyright. Adam Ruschival invited everyone to participate.
Guide Dog Users of Kentucky: Bill Deatherage reported everyone enjoyed the walk around the UCHM neighborhood in June. They would like to do more walks in the future. Deb Lewis reported that two members spoke at the Humane Society Day Camp in late July and early August. The next conference call meeting will be on August 22.
Support Alliance of the Visually Impaired: Bill Roberts reported that sixteen members and four guests (one of whom joined) attended their August 9 meeting. Officer Courtney Yerington (Owensboro Police Department) gave an excellent presentation on scams. Members will have a booth at Senior Day Out on September 22 at Town Square Mall. Members hope to have a White Cane Day activity in October. Several members are interested in having a braille class so Rick is investigating.
KCB Next Generation: Joey Couch reported the chapter held a conference call on August 14. Last month’s art activity with transition students at the McDowell Center was very successful. Members are excited that Jeff Bishop will be attending the KCB convention in November. Since one member is pregnant, they voted to move officer elections to October. Members continue to explore ways to reach out to new members. Conference call meetings are held at 8 PM on the conference line on the second Sunday of each month.
Committees
PR/Membership: Rick Boggess reported the committee met on August 3. They discussed the newsletter. Four chapters were feature in the June issue and we hope to spotlight the remaining chapters in August. Rick has submitted an article for SAVI; Library Users and Guide Dog Users are encouraged to submit articles. Efforts to establish contacts on the four year college campuses will resume in September. Members voted to place the ACB Radio logo on the Sound Prints podcasts so they will show up with other ACB Radio podcasts through iTunes searches. The next meeting will be September 7.
Convention Committee: Joey Couch reported the committee met the first time on August 14. Members shared several speaker ideas. The convention will be held November 11-12 at the Ramada Inn at 1041 Zorn Avenue in Louisville. The next meeting will be a conference call at 7 PM on August 31.
SRC: Deb Lewis reported the committee met on July 22. Due to continuing budget constraints, OFB continues to serve only category I clients. Members heard an update on the bioptic driving program. Several visually impaired clients have been hired by the Census Bureau. Joe Elliott did not accept the position as director of the BEP Program. New members have not been appointed so old members will serve on the committee until appointments are made.

New Business
Carla Ruschival made a motion to contribute $150 to sponsor one hole in the KSB Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament. Joey Couch seconded the motion which was unanimously approved.
Carla Ruschival made a motion to contribute 300 to support the Bill Roby Games at KSB. The motion was seconded by Elaine Weisbard and unanimously approved.
Joey Couch made a motion to contribute $200 to the ACB Holiday Auction. The motion was seconded by Elaine Weisbard and unanimously approved.
Gerry Slusher reported the Cincinnati Association for the Blind has purchased a larger building for the industries program and will relocate there in 2017. Many Kentuckians work in that program.
At the request of Carla Ruschival, ACB Liaison Dan Dillon provided members with information about his background. Dan has been active in ACB since 1999 and offered to help in any way possible. Adam Ruschival pointed out that Dan has actually participated in the KSB Charitable Golf Tournament in the past.
Carla Ruschival pointed out that KSB has a new interim principal, Tristan Parsons. Although he has been on the job only a couple of weeks, he has been very well received.

Rick Boggess made a motion to adjourn. The motion was seconded by Joey Couch and unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 8:49 PM.
